Permobil NZ Spinal Trust Team
Why I am choosing to support NZST
After fracturing 6 vertebrae in a motorcycle accident in 2024 I was lucky to get away without spinal damage, many others are not so lucky and I feel the opportunity to support a trust supporting these people is too good to turn down.
My Bio
I dipped my toes into cycling back in 2004/2005 with a couple events. After finishing High school i never touched a road bike again for 20 years.
April 2024 had a motorcycle accident and fractured T7/8/9/10/11/12 and was laid up for a while. I was incredibly fortunate to not suffer any spinal cord injury. As part of my recovery and to get some weight off I purchased a road bike and a Zwift subscription. I found cycling to be the only form of exercise that didn’t hurt and started to get the bug for it again.
Facebook flashed the Tour of NZ into my feed and I thought a challenge like that would be a great way to force me to train to help with recovery and the minute I saw the NZST had a team in the event I knew I had to do it. It’s a great opportunity to raise funds for a trust that supports the many others who were less fortunate than me with their injuries.
Essentially being very out of shape and going from “Couch to ToNZ” in 14 weeks, was never going to be easy, but that’s what challenges are about. With some dedication, support of family and help from Johan at JT coaching I will get there and give it my best.
